Children and adolescents age 6 and
older need at least an hour a day of physical exercise. Many classic
activities such as playing on the equipment at the playground or park give
them the physical activity and muscle strengthening they need to stay fit
and healthy. They also need to keep their minds active over the Summer or
risk the loss of some of the academic skills they acquired during the
school year. For many kids, riding their bike
to the playground and playing sports in the backyard have given way to
watching television, playing video games and spending hours online. EnviroKids wants to get the kids
outside and active this summer, so we have put together the “Off the
Couch” fun and games handbook. The book is filled with fun and
educational crafts, activities, experiments and games that will keep them
busy and at the same time learning about the world around them. As with our Earth Day program, the
kids learn a lot about the environment. Children have an intuitive
fascination with nature and opportunities for learning exist everywhere.
Healthy outdoor activities include hands-on projects like identifying
plants, insects, birds and animals, digging for fossils and other
treasures, building birdhouses, starting their own garden, hiking,
scavenger hunts...the list goes on. |
